THE IMPORTANT ROLE OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGIES IN ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT AND GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT GROWTH

Abstract
This paper explores the pivotal role of information and communication technologies (ICT) in driving economic development and enhancing Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth across diverse global regions. Drawing upon empirical data and meta-analyses from various developing and developed economies—including the European Union, China, the Western Balkans, Central Asia, and Sub-Saharan Africa—the study reveals a strong and statistically significant positive correlation between ICT infrastructure and economic performance. Key indicators such as internet usage, mobile broadband subscriptions, and digital capital investment are shown to contribute directly to productivity growth, employment, and innovation. Additionally, the paper discusses the reverse causality where economic growth can also stimulate ICT expansion. The analysis highlights that regions with targeted digital policies and investments in human capital experience faster and more inclusive economic transformation. Policy implications and recommendations for emerging economies aiming to harness digital technologies for sustainable growth are also discussed.
